Building an N Scale Layout From Start to Finish
This is a compilation of a 4-part series on building a 3.5′ x 5.5′ N scale layout. The beginnings, endings, recaps, etc. have been edited out to condense the total time of the video. This video combines everything into one video to see the process from start to finish.
Esther's Hobby is a great place to shop. Good discounts and supporting local business.
I wish they would make these sets in ho scale n scale sucks 😞
Kato is known all over the world for their superb Japanese high quality Locomotives and rolling stock. Nice buy and great video!!
I got a HO scale NS c40-8 for Christmas also a TTX 40 ft well car and the NS engine is huge by HO scale standards
if the controller says forward but the train goes in reverse, flip the connector going into the track.
Welcome to the world of N scale and good choice with the Kato set. I have been using Kato since 2009 and in my opinion, they are the Volvo and Rolls Royce of model trains for reliability and durability. They are friendly enough to entice newcomers into the hobby and are good value for money.
You can find Kato DC diesel locos for 80 to 90 dollars, the"air lines " are for magnetic uncoupling,I am a big fan of Kato, very reliable
With DC power the loco movement is always in the same direction for the same setting of the direction switch – even if you reverse the direction that the loco points to. If you put the loco at the other end of the train then forward and reverse will work correctly … just something to get used to.
How much is the starter set ? Do you like Lionel or Bachmann ?
Do all 5 of the locomotives come in the box?
Can you use any N scale train on a Kato Kit ?
if it was me I would buy additional track and make it big enough for 2 trains
Asking costs nothing
My dad gave me a ton of model train stuff from the '60s.
I didn't expect to spend an hour watching trains, but it was great! Thanks.
Thanks!
Newbie question I’m sure but what is the name and brand of the metal rectangular weights used to hold objects down when gluing? I have searched and searched and can’t them online. Also, what are the holes for?
Which is cheaper to work with N scale or HO?
So, that was only 3.5 x 5. Omg. Me thinks I need to rethink my dreams of a 4 x 12 lol.
I enjoy watching the construction of a layout. Your video is well done and you are very articulate. Great work!
Mind blowing! I don’t know if I can get to this level of detail but you’ve given me a ton of great ideas. Thank you very much! Fantastic video.
That is beautiful. Excellent job 👍 Very enjoyable
Very nice construction… wow. Probably gives away my age, but I remember making :landscape" from chicken wire and paper mache. What I would have given to have foam back then..LOL

Love this
I love your videos 👍, but please get a workbench. It makes my knees hurt every time I watch one of your videos. 😀
I love this video. I'm especially impressed with the working signal lights, and railroad crossings. I love how the building windows, and street lighting project in the dark. Very realistic. I am especially impressed with the cabin, and passenger views from inside the engine, and cars. The realism of the scale is incredible. Can hardly wait to build my first layout from scratch. I've been planning this for a long time. I'll take my father, another railroad enthusiast, along for the ride. Thank you very much for posting. I will be visiting your channel again. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
Steve, You are a true talent. This 3 x 5 layout is well planned and a diorama delight ! All the fine details and taking the static of some details is so pleasing to observe. Well, done. An inspiration to us all..
Steve, that was very impressive. Kudos, Gary
Love your layouts live in an RV have a n-scale train would like a small layout for my back room 3ft x 5ft under a window
Thank you for posting. I learned a lot. You do your colors just like an artist that uses base colors and washes…. except you do it in 3D and includes detailed textures.
man that’s cool be interested to know the cost or ruff guess
Hi Steve. Greetings from Malaysian here. What a great layout! I may build a similar one probably in 2×4. Luckily for me, Kato products are easier to find compared to other brand. Will look up more on your posts for inspiration and reference. Thanks 😄
